MAJOR FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS IN MONGOLIA
Mongolia hosts many unique festivals throughout the year that reflect its nomadic heritage, traditional sports, and cultural diversity. From the famous Naadam Festival to regional events like the Golden Eagle Festival and Thousand Camel Festival, these celebrations offer visitors unforgettable cultural experiences.


Naadam Festival is Mongolia’s most famous national festival held annually from July 11–13. It celebrates the country’s history and culture through the traditional Three Manly Games: wrestling, horse racing, and archery. Naadam dates back to the era of Chinggis Khan and is celebrated across the country.

Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year), meaning “White Moon,” is the Mongolian Lunar New Year. Families visit elders, exchange greetings called zolgokh, and share traditional foods such as buuz and dairy products. It symbolizes renewal, respect, and the arrival of spring.

GOLDEN EAGLE FESTIVAL
Golden Eagle Festival Held every October in Bayan-Ulgii, the Golden Eagle Festival celebrates the ancient Kazakh tradition of hunting with trained golden eagles. Hunters compete in skill demonstrations and cultural games.


NAURYZ FESTIVAL
Nauryz Festival is a traditional spring celebration of the Kazakh community in western Mongolia. Held on March 21, it marks the arrival of spring and the new year, celebrated with traditional food, music, and cultural gatherings.


ICE FESTIVAL
The Ice Festival (Khuvsgul Lake) takes place every March on the frozen surface of Lake Khuvsgul. Visitors can enjoy ice skating, sled races, ice sculptures, and winter cultural performances.


Thousand Camel Festival Held in the Gobi Desert, the Thousand Camel Festival celebrates the culture of camel herders. Activities include camel racing, camel polo, and traditional music.

YAK FESTIVAL
The Yak Festival is held in Arkhangai Province to promote yak herding culture. Events include yak racing, yak polo, and contests celebrating yak products.


DANSHIG NAADAM
Danshig Naadam is a traditional religious and cultural festival revived in recent years. It includes Buddhist ceremonies, wrestling, archery, and cultural performances.


Shaman Festival /Darkhad Valley/
The Shaman Festival celebrates Mongolia’s ancient shamanic traditions, especially among northern ethnic groups. Rituals, music, and spiritual ceremonies are performed.


The Reindeer Festival in northern Mongolia celebrates the culture of the Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders. Visitors can see reindeer races, traditional clothing, and taiga culture.
